Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima won’t be playing Konami’s forthcoming remake of Snake Eater.

Due next month, Konami is remaking the third Metal Gear Solid game to reignite the series, but it’s been done without Kojima’s involvement after their acrimonious split in 2015.

In a new interview with Ssense, Kojima was asked if he’ll be playing Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater once it’s released. “No, I won’t,” he responded simply, laughing.

There’s clearly no love lost between Kojima and Konami, as he’s been focused on his own IP: Death Stranding.

Still, he even had some choice words for the rest of the industry, as he feels games today are too similar. After watching this year’s Summer Games Fest, Kojima felt every game shown had players either fighting an alien monster or a medieval monster.

“Even the visuals and the systems are pretty much the same,” he said, “and a lot of people enjoy this, I understand, but it is important to put something really new in there for the industry.”

Kojima’s thoughts provide extra context as to why with Death Stranding 2 he wasn’t “interested in appealing to the mass market”, as he previously told Edge magazine.

“Of course, I want people to play my game, so I must listen to them to a certain extent,” he said. “But also, I’m not interested in making something that appeals to everyone.”

After its release, Kojima stated he was “happy” with the critical reception to the sequel, which was far more positive than the first game.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater will be released on 28th August across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

The game’s iconic Bond-theme opening has been revised for the remake (video above), but will retain the original credits.
