Obsidian’s miniature garden-based sequel Grounded 2 released in early access earlier this week, and has since pulled in some impressive player numbers on Steam.

According to data shared on SteamDB, Grounded 2 has a peak concurrent player count of 49,836. To compare, the original game has a peak of 32,012 players on Steam, which it reached four years ago.

The studio also recently laid out its early access roadmap for Grounded 2, which has been grouped into four categories: Fall update, winter update, summer update and future plans.

Upcoming features include things such as ziplines and something that for now it has simply listed as “cosiness”. To me, this means arm chairs and steaming cups of tea. New weapons will also be coming to Grounded 2, as will new armours and archetypes.

Obsidian also said it will be adding new creatures as time goes on, with the likes of crickets and earwigs planned for the game’s winter update. “Watery” creatures are then planned for summer.

The team also has a few upcoming additions that, for now, it is keeping a secret, with their place on the roadmap covered by purple spray paint. What could they be?

Ahead of the game’s release, our Bertie managed to have a chat with the team about what we can expect from Grounded 2. He found out that Grounded 2 might be the second part of a trilogy, and even got some hints that we can probably expect it to eventually arrive on both Switch 2 and PS5.

“I’ve had a mixed experience with Grounded 2. It flip-flops between brilliance and frustration,” Bertie wrote in Eurogamer’s Now Playing Grounded 2 feature. “The magic of living in an insect kingdom that’s been made massive around me, by virtue of my being shrunk, is absolutely still here… But with this added game-framework also comes busywork and a sense of grind, and a feeling of sometimes being held back from doing what you really want to do.”
